The first Europeans to explore the Puget Sound ventured there in 1774. Upon arriving in the Sound, they found an abundance of wildlife, a wide-ranging assortment of vegetation, and a prosperous Native American population. The Natives called this area Wulch, which means saltwater.

George Vancouver claimed the Sound for Great Britain in 1792 and named it after one of his officers, Lieutenant Peter Puget. Thirty years later, the Sound came under joint occupancy by the United States and Great Britain before the Oregon Treaty was signed in 1846, giving full control to the US. The Sound eventually became part of Washington State in 1889.

Seattle, the largest city on the Sound, quickly became the primary trading center with Alaska and with most of the west coast. By the time the Northern Pacific Railroad reached Puget Sound in 1888, it was already a well-established and important trading center.

The Sound Region is one of the top 15 most populated metropolitan areas in the United States. But, skip over to one of the thousands of islands scattered throughout the Sound or to catch a glimpse of the serene place that George Vancouver first explored. Or schedule a weekend in the Olympic National Forest to see one of the few temperate rain forests in the world.
